DESCRIPTION

WWE '12 is the latest game in the popular WWE wrestling franchise, and this sequel to WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 features numerous improvements to deliver the most exhilarating wrestling experience to date. The new 'Predator' animation system provides the most realistic and fluid animations ever seen in a wrestling game, and the core gameplay improvements as well as improved artificial intelligence elevate the franchise to a new level.

GAMEPLAY ENHANCEMENTS
WWE '12 has a new control layout and a new momentum and stamina system. The pinning meter now makes it increasingly difficult for players to kick out of a pin the more fatigued they become. Players can now attack when they are down and can also interrupt elimination moves with attacks. Players can target specific limbs during a match and can also perform submissions using the new Breaking Point submission system.

IMPROVED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
The artificial intelligence in WWE '12 has also been improved, and now characters perform different moves according to the physical condition of their opponent. If a player overuses a particular move within a match, that move loses its effectiveness as the opponent learns to predict and combat that move.

WWE CREATION SUITE
Players can create and customize their own WWE superstars, which include their own storylines, entrances, finishing moves, and highlight reels. Players can store and share these creations online, and can even create brand new WWE arenas in WWE '12.

WWE UNIVERSE 2.0
The new, bigger WWE '12 Universe mode allows you to shape the destiny of your wrestler's career with the actions and decisions you make outside the ring. This mode now introduces more unpredictable elements to the storyline based on the decisions you make.

ROAD TO WRESTLEMANIA
The updated 'Road to WrestleMania' mode in WWE '12 consists of a storyline which spans 18 months of the WWE, and covers two WrestleManias. The story is split into three acts, and for each act the player will assume the role of a different wrestler. Determine the story of each act by the decisions you make and the fights you win.

TV QUALITY PRESENTATION
The new wrestler animations, broadcast camera system and lighting technology in WWE '12 will deliver an electrifying presentation of the sport of wrestling - it will be just like watching the WWE on your HD TV!

WWE '12 ROSTER
The game will feature the largest roster of WWE Superstars, Divas and Legends in the franchise to date, including John Cena, Randy Orton and The Miz. Legends will include The Rock, Undertaker and much more. For a full roster of wrestlers available click here.
IGN Reviews - WWE '12 Review
What THQ has done here serves its audience spectacularly. WWE '12 retains and improves upon the already-great presentation of its predecessors, capturing a likeness of wrestling that is uncanny. And it plays just as well as it looks. This should be considered a milestone for the wrestling simulation genre. It's certainly a much-needed breath of fresh air. Let's just hope every year can continue to be this remarkable - the bar is now set very high.

Presentation: 9.0
Some incredible work here, recreating the WWE experience in a dramatic, almost lifelike way. The story needs some work.
Graphics: 8.5
On the ramp and in the ring, the graphics are great. When it comes to acting, the results are about as good as you might expect.
Sound: 7.5
All the music you want is here, and so are the wrestlers' voices, but the wrestlers have more passion on TV.
Gameplay: 8.5
The core-mechanics are excellent, but the single-player story doesn't want to let you use them.
Lasting Appeal: 9.5
There are almost too many options. Online is great but the interface is a bit awkward.
A promising reinvention of the series.

It’s clear that Yukes and THQ put a lot of effort into the reinvention of this cash-cow franchise. A lot of the things that they’ve managed to accomplish are fantastic, particularly in the areas of presentation, customization, and gameplay. There are certainly some problems that will need to be ironed out prior to next year’s installment, but overall, WWE ’12 provides a very solid base for a new wrestling franchise to be built upon.

Likes
  • Solid new gameplay engine
  • Ton of customization options
  • Slick presentation
Dislikes
  • AI is lacking
  • Some general glitchyness
  • Rope physics are strange and unrealistic
You have to give Yuke's credit for aiming high. The wealth of content and customisation options on offer is absolutely staggering and wrestling fans that wish to ignore the game's main campaign mode will certainly find plenty to entertain them here.

WWE 12, however, isn't in the same league as the series' high-water marks. It is the nucleus of what could be a great game. If Yuke's continues to build on the solid foundations it has here, strip out the game's flaws, and tinker some more with the gameplay, it could create a game that would certainly live up to the accolades on its packaging. As it stands right now, though, WWE 12 is certainly bigger, but whether it's badder and better is debatable.

Huge amounts of content
x Horrible counter system
x Dull campaign
x Presentation is hit and miss
Though the game takes a new approach to the battle system and makes the Road to Wrestlemania mode feel a bit more like a "real" story mode (rather than an auxiliary single-player mode), it still feels like the series we've all grown to know and love. Don't be nervous about jumping into this new entry because of the new name; this is very much a spiritual successor to last year's SvR.

At the end of the day, WWE '12 gives fans exactly what they want: a cohesive and fun wrestling game. There aren't a whole lot of different ways to do that.

Graphics: 3.5
In-ring visuals look fine, but other graphics look blocky and lack detail.
Control: 4.5
New battle system is easy to learn and is nicely balanced for both pro and casual players.
Music/Sound FX/Voice Acting: 4.0
Voice acting is authentic, and announcing is done extremely well.
Play Value: 4.5
With tons of customizable content, a deep Universe mode and an all-new Road to Wrestlemania, you won't be wrestled away from your console any time soon.
The largest misstep of WWE '12 has nothing to do with the game itself, but with the fact that it's been released near the tail end of the holiday rush. This hardly makes it a disappointing game in any way, just not as interesting or exciting compared to the incredible string of extraordinary titles circling around it. That said, WWE '12 is a decent offering that gets the job done without much fuss and deserves to be in any WWE fan's collection.

REVOLUTION REPORT CARD
+Improved maneuverability and positioning
+Limb targeting system
+Almost HUD-less
+Create an Arena
+/-Reliance on reversal system for difficulty
-Road to Wrestlemania is too basic
-Why Jacob Cass?
-Doesn't change the series much
It would have been foolish to throw out all the great tools built over the years for SmackDown, but THQ had a real chance to change things up in WWE 12, and the alterations to the actual wrestling isn't enough to earn its new name.

Even if it doesn't revolutionize wrestling games, WWE 12 is the best wrassler around and mixes things up enough to not feel stale. It owes much to SmackDown, but everything it borrows is still great, just slightly used. If you wanted a completely new wrestling experience, wait for the next challenger to WWE to give it a shot (and probably fail). In the meantime, THQ will just keep delivering the same dependably great package.

You'll love
  • Fast paced combat
  • Gigantic selection of off and online modes
  • Great roster with many classic superstars
You'll hate
  • Not the new experience the title implies
  • Matches with more than two guys can be hectic
  • So many customization options can be daunting
