DESCRIPTION

Rage is the highly anticipated futuristic first-person shooter (FPS) developed by id Software, who were the developers of the Doom and Quake games which revolutionized the FPS genre on the PC. Powered by id Software's ground-breaking Tech 5 engine, Rage promises spectacular graphics, a unique first person shooter experience, exhilarating vehicular combat, and role-playing game (RPG) elements.

The game is set a post-apocalyptic world in the not-too-distant future, following the impact of a meteorite with has reduced earth to a barren wasteland. You are a survivor of the Ark project, in which a small percentage of the earth's population have been cryogenically frozen underground to prevent mankind's extinction. Many years later you awake, and emerge to find that the earth's surface is a vast wasteland populated by bandit gangs, strange mutants, and an oppressive government regime call the Authority. As you try to survive in this new world, the intriguing story of Rage unfolds.

FEATURES:
  • An Exhilarating First-Person Shooter - Fight gangs of bandits and masses of vicious mutants using your arsenal of diverse weapons as well as items you pick up along the way, such as personal turrets, wingsticks, remote-controlled bomb cars and sentry bots.
  • Thrilling Third-Person Vehicular Combat - Race over the desolate wasteland in your dune buggy as you fight four-wheeling bandit gangs and take part in dangerous races. You can upgrade and modify your buggy with specialized parts, paint jobs and weapons.
  • Role-Playing Game Elements - Rage will feature an inventory system and players will also have the option to customize their weapons.
  • Compelling Single Player Campaign - Besides the first-person action and the vehicle combat, Rage provides a vast environment for you to explore and you will meet extraordinary characters along the way. You will also be able to complete many side quests as you progress through the engaging story.
  • Competitive Multiplayer - Up to six players can compete in Deathmatch maps designed to make use of vehicles. Collect rally points that appear around the map while killing other players and stealing their points.
  • Cooperative Missions - Play a series of two-player cooperative missions based on stories that you hear about as you play through the single player campaign.
  • Jaw-Dropping Graphics - With an incredible amount of detail, running at an astonishing 60 frames per second, the ground-breaking Tech 5 engine developed by id Software uses a new Megatexture technology to bring the vast wasteland within Rage to life.
GameSpot Reviews - RAGE
A visually stunning, relatively safe shooter from id Software.

The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage’s shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game’s characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable.
. . .
All the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn’t revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter.

Presentation: 6.5
Console-style menus. Storyline is weak, few memorable personalities, no satisfying ending, game starts to drag toward the end.
Graphics: 9.5
One of the best looking games ever made, assuming you can get it running smoothly.
Sound: 8.5
Great gun sound effects and a high quality soundtrack and voice acting.
Gameplay: 9.0
Excellent shooting sequences and a surprisingly good car combat mode.
Lasting Appeal: 8.5
A lot of content in the single-player mode, plus co-op missions and a vehicle combat competitive multiplayer mode.
Rage is coming out at a difficult time of year, but even if you've got your heart set on the two FPS behemoths coming out in the next four weeks, this really isn't a game to be overlooked - especially if you're a console gamer. It's easily one of the best-looking titles available for the Xbox 360, and while PS3 owners already have Killzone 3 as their graphical heavyweight, this is infinitely more enjoyable.

Rage is a technical powerhouse, and if you can overlook the bits that don't quite work, you'll find one of the most exciting shooters we've had in years.

Satisfying combat with genuinely smart foes
Looks incredible, and runs at 60 FPS
x Pseudo RPG elements are rather weak
x Driving feels a bit middle-of-the-road
For some, it will all add up to a strangely shallow experience, where the story never asserts itself enough to feel less than periphery, and where things we take for granted nowadays have been ignored or forgotten. This certainly isn't a video game like the ones we're used to playing in 2011, smothered in celebrity voice actors and shoulder-grabbingly intense expository cut-scenes, and varnished by psychologists so we never look in the wrong direction when we're sprinting away from a set-piece. Instead it's something simpler and more old-fashioned.

Judged on game design and content, then, it's slightly anachronistic, but as a toy box full of things you can only do in games, Rage is warm-hearted and refreshing. It's not going to change the world, but it does serve as a timely reminder of that other thing id Software games always did besides smashing through some new technological barrier. They made shooting things fun, and it's nice to have that back.
There is so much to love in the wasteland, but quests feel like they took a backseat to the engine. Regardless, Rage represents the most exciting first-person shooting in gaming bar none. If you've got a small dose of patience and a willingness to explore, you've got to play this game.

Revolution Report Card
+Best in First-Person Shooting
+Excellent car combat
-But fetch quests are annoying
-as is checking in after loading screens
+Enemy AI
+Dungeon and car combat arena design
-NPCs talk too slow
+Guns, guns, guns
+Distracting mingames, Rage Frenzy
-Texture pop-in on consoles
+/-Multiplayer modes
Despite the painfully unoriginal setting, Rage saves itself simply by being an enjoyable FPS from a developer that knows their way around them.

Granted, just because Rage isn't "that" game or doesn't have "this" feature, it doesn't have to be awful. As an FPS, it's mighty fun. For starters, it runs fast, staying around 60 frames per second constantly, and gives you a suite of weapons that can hold their own, even if or when you empty your "favorite" and need to switch.

. . .

It's understandable that people would expect a lot from Rage, being that it's made by Id, a developer whose entire history has been about dropping technology bombs that also have a fun FPS (and neat multiplayer) strapped onto them. Rage fits that mold snugly, but it's nothing revolutionary. It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call Rage badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011.
Rage is id’s attempt to create a hybrid game, both in its genre and in its multiplatform approach, which is quite the departure for a traditionally FPS focused, PC-centric company. Rage is still an id FPS at its core, but it’s also an RPG complete with chatty townsfolk and plenty of items to purchase and craft. Oh, and it’s a racing and car-combat game as well.

GamesRadar Verdict

Rage is many things: open-world driving and racing game, meticulously designed first-person shooter, stunning realization of a living post-apocalyptic wasteland, and it does all of these things well. It ends just as the party is really getting going, but even the pre-party is fantastic.

You'll love
  • One of the most beautiful games ever
  • Awesome FPS gameplay
  • Nifty driving as well
You'll hate
  • Racing minigames are superfluous
  • Some noticeable pop-in of textures
  • Disappointing last section
The Father Of The FPS Returns Triumphant

Rage's story and overworld design feel dated, but its heart-pounding gunplay is a nice change of pace in a market filled with "follow me" and pop-and-fire shooters. While light RPG elements are present, this is mainly a game for players who love challenging combat experiences.

Concept:
A wild romp through a post-apocalyptic wasteland that features gripping gunplay and satisfying looting
Graphics:
The id Tech 5 engine provides amazing visuals presented at a fluid 60 frames per second
Sound:
The soundtrack is appropriately moody and the impressive voice acting fits the colorful personalities
Playability:
Rage’s shooter component shines and offers an experience unlike any other FPS on the market. The racing sections are no more than optional diversions
Entertainment:
Id’s return is worth the wait and stands out in the crowded FPS market
Replay:
Moderately High – Good for a long while, but the thrills won’t last forever
