Developed exclusively for the Xbox 360, this third-person shooter again puts you in the shoes of Marcus Fenix, the heroic leader of Delta Squad. Eighteen months after the last human city is destroyed, the battle against the Locust invaders continues, and Marcus and his comrades must fight to save mankind.

Gears of War 3 features six exciting multiplayer modes, including a new four-player cooperative mode. With the introduction of many new weapon types (including a fully mechanical suit), more playable COG characters (including four female characters), several new Locust enemy types, and the introduction of the new Lambent enemy, Gears of War 3 is a fitting conclusion to this best-selling franchise.

Gears of War 3 - Review (GameSpot)
Gears of War 3 concludes an excellent trilogy with engrossing cooperative play, taut competitive action, and a masterful campaign.

The Good
  • Exciting, emotional, and eminently satisfying campaign
  • Beautiful locations enrich story and gameplay alike
  • Fortifications make Horde mode more strategic
  • Switching sides in Beast mode is brutal fun
The Bad
  • No tutorial for Beast mode
Accessibility is one of the strengths of Gears of War 3. Though it is an undeniably intense shooter, it scales very well to accommodate a range of skill levels. This is just one facet of the pervasive attention to detail that suffuses the whole game and gives you the sense that you are experiencing the pinnacle of the series. From the taut Versus competition to the two great cooperative modes, GOW 3 delivers immensely entertaining experiences on both sides of The Locust War. But the real triumph is the campaign, a masterpiece of exciting gameplay and emotional storytelling that stands head and shoulders above its predecessors. Even if you don't remember where you were on Emergence Day, this is one adventure you won't soon forget.
Gears of War 3 represents state-of-the-art design and gameplay where you become the king badass among a gory world of bad-asses. Every third-person, cover-based shooter from here on out will likely be compared to Gears 3, and it provides a fitting and poignant - if sometimes cheesy - closing chapter to the trilogy.

Presentation: 8.5
The most realized vision and expression of Gears of War, Gears 3 earns top marks for heavy polish but remains relatively conservative in the innovation department.
Graphics: 9.0
Slick, beautiful, disheveled and garishly bloody, this is one seriously good looking game.
Sound: 9.0
Bullets scream, weapons boom, heads pop and creatures roar, all to the orchestra swell, creating a unified aural assault that’s immediately recognizable.
Gameplay: 9.0
Brutal, tight and instantly familiar for legacy players, a purist sensibility guides the gameplay and adds new weapons, enemies and multiplayer modes to expand the experience.
Lasting Appeal: 9.5
Multiple difficulties, 4-player story mode co-op, 5-player online co-op, Achievements aplenty, 70 medals to earn and multiple modes that will remain well-populated increase the shelf life.
Gears of War defined a console generation, but in 2011 it's almost become a victim of its own success. The signature third-person cover system has become commonplace, and plenty of its tropes have become weary from third-party overuse, such as the needless mini-cutscenes that play out as your team break through locked doors. Yet when all is said and done, and everything has been torn open by chainsaw, torque bow and shotgun, it's clear Epic's third entry in its flagship series has far more meat on its bulky bones than the legion of imitators.
. . .
Few games offer up as much as GOW 3, and even fewer manage to do it this successfully. This is quite easily the best Gears of War yet, weaving excellent core mechanics together with the renewed perception of an ever-maturing developer. Once again, Epic has successfully iterated on a series that most other developers are still desperately trying to imitate.
Cole Train
Excellent mechanics
Incredible amount of modes and maps
Solid campaign
Gears of War 3 may not give you that sense of closure you might need in order believe this is the last Gears story, but it will definitely give you a complete adrenaline rush of sheer bloody fun. Finally, the gaming season has arrived.

Graphics: 4.6
Visuals may be only a slight improvement over the past games, but it is because of this that the world comes alive.
Control: 4.5
The controls you've come to know and love. Why fix what is not broken?
Music/Sound FX/Voice Acting: 4.7
Everything pops into place nicely. It is truly complimentary that the voice acting and score are on the same level.
Play Value: 4.5
I would say this is the most fun I've had with Gears in years.
As a package, Gears of War 3 is simply the best. Small nags you may have - like less than stellar dialogue or some overpowered attackers in Beast Mode - fall by the wayside as balanced competitive multiplayer, deep Horde Mode mechanics, and a driving campaign win out. Epic Games have trimmed the fat and churned out one lean, purposeful Gear, ready to stomp some Locusts back into the ground.

Revolution Report Card

+Purposeful campaign
+Great cast of characters
-Except for Jace
+/-Excellent conclusion(?!)
+Bright, colorful, even vivid environments
+Mad World
+Fast, frantic competitive multiplayer
+Matchmaking with dedicated servers
-Some minor balancing issues
+Horde Mode 2.0
-Not enough Cole Train
Gears of War 3 is awesome. The campaign is epic, with action sequences that are more intense, weapons that are more powerful, enemies that are more formidable and heroes that are more relatable than ever before. The multiplayer is extremely generous, with a horde of new maps and new modes that are instant classics, as well as perfectly suitable for either competition or cooperation, experts or beginners. All aspects considered, this is a spectacular shooter.
. . .
Gears of War 3 boasts the best co-op and multiplayer of the series, by far, easily making up for the less-than-satisfying campaign. The end of the trilogy may not live up to your epic expectations, but somewhere in the tenth - or hundredth - hour of Beast and Horde 2.0 modes, you’ll forgive it.

You'll love
  • Campaign’s intense action and ferocious enemies
  • Brutal yin-and-yang of Horde and Beast modes
  • Quality and diversity evident in every multiplayer map
You'll hate
  • Occasionally too predictable and too familiar story
  • Your kill-stealing, glory-hogging AI partners
  • Hanging out with Ice-T instead of Cole, Dom or Baird
Gears of War 3 doesn’t do anything radical, not that anyone expected it to. Only the staunchest Gears haters will find much fault here, though. This is the best execution yet of an idea that spawned one of the biggest modern franchises in all of gaming. What’s not to love?

Concept:
Make the biggest, most comprehensive, most polished game in a franchise known for all those qualities
Graphics:
Unreal Engine 3 still looks great, and this is the flagship title for the engine that has dominated this console cycle
Sound:
The louder you crank it, the better Gears 3 sounds. This is a game meant for the full audiovisual experience
Playability:
The controls haven’t changed, but Epic has gotten better at not making the A button stick you to cover you didn’t intend it to
Entertainment:
If you like shooters, this is as every bit as good a choice as Call of Duty, Battlefield, or Halo
Replay:
High – You’ll still be popping this game in five years from now
Simply the best Gears of War game in existence.

So there you have it; the end to an iconic and highly revered trilogy, but also the start of something bigger. In months to come, the inevitable string of Gears Of War 3 DLC will bolster what is already one of the most generous packages ever committed to disc.

So in many ways this isn't exactly goodbye, but the start of a new chapter in Gears Of War history, and we’re sure fans will agree that there will be plenty to look forward to.

Final Verdict

Absolutely massive, and likely to leave a lasting imprint on your brain for months to come. Gears Of War 3 is the mother of all final chapters, delivering a satisfying gut-punch ending, but leaving a multiplayer offering that will be played for many months to follow. Few series have gone out with such a bang.
