DESCRIPTION
Dead Island is a
horror action adventure, set in an open world environment, and is played from a
first-person perspective with a heavy focus on melee combat. On a tropical island paradise in the South Pacific, the ultimate holiday destination for the rich and the famous, a mysterious epidemic suddenly breaks out turning everybody on the island into blood-thirsty zombies. Only four individuals are immune to zombification, and must survive to discover what's really going on, and ultimately find a way to escape the island.
In
Dead Island there are thousands of weapons to collect, from simple wooden bats to fire-axes to heavy rifles, and the game's
weapon customization system allows gamers to craft any weapon required to ensure survival.
Dead Island also incorporates
RPG elements and you can enhance and develop your character using an experience system and un-lockable skill trees. Another great feature includes seamless 4-player
co-operative multiplayer which allows players to drop in and out of each other's games at any time with no loss of progress.

Dead Island - Game Review (IGN)
 | A schlocky, gruesomely fun action role-playing game awaits you on Dead Island. Bring three friends.
The Good
- Varied open-world setting
- Strong cooperative play
- Melee combat is grisly fun
- Good zombie voice acting
The Bad
- Uneven visual quality
- Weak characters
- Poor human voice acting
As a sandbox action role-playing game based on killing zombies with friends, Dead Island is a proposition rich with possibilities, and it exploits a good deal of them, if imperfectly. There's easily 20 hours of content in a single playthrough - much more if you're exploring the Polynesian paradise sandbox and messing around with trucks as much as you should be. If you don't step off the boat expecting a taut horror experience, a masterful gun game, or compelling characters, you'll have a bloody good time. |
 | Dead Island probably won't win any game of the year awards. It's got visual bugs, the controls take a bit to feel normal, and the presentation in general isn't up to snuff. But the game gets a lot right. There is a huge world to explore, thousands of zombies to kill, and tons of side quests to take.
Presentation: 7.0
The story is a bit flat. It's easy enough to upgrade your weapons and such, but there's no flair to the menus.
Graphics: 8.0
Environments and zombies look good, but clipping and texture flicker are issues. Cutscenes are stiff.
Sound: 8.5
Every time I came to a new area, I'd listen for zombie action. I don't think I'll forget the cries of a zombie chasing me anytime soon.
Gameplay: 8.0
There are tons of quests to take, you build out your version of the character, and weapon mods keep combat interesting. The melee fighting is fun.
Lasting Appeal: 8.5
If you can get over the game's stumbles and appreciate what it does right, you have a long campaign with online options to try out. |
(Out of 5) | Dead Island is a good game. But if you pick it up and are expecting something radically different from what you're used to, you'll be sorely disappointed. The RPG twist on the genre is fairly cool, and does result in an experience that is longer than you might expect, but the game's utter lack of story and reliance on pre-established genre conventions make it a pretty big missed opportunity. Dead Island may be a nice vacation, but it's far from the most memorable trip you've ever taken. Yelp it next time.
Graphics: 3.7
Visuals are not very detailed, but kills are dynamic and gruesome.
Control: 3.7
First-person controls are fairly easy to use, but gunplay takes some getting used to.
Music/Sound FX: 3.1
Music is sparse, and vocal performances are uneven.
Play Value: 3.9
There's 20+ hours of content here, but no real incentive to replay. |
 | Review: Dead Island is Like a Bunch of Games You've Already Played
While killing zombies has its moments, Dead Island only features two types of missions that don't involve killing horde A at location B: fetch quests, and glorified fetch quests. And while the game tries to offer up a few new kinds of zombies to vary the gameplay, these overpowered and irritating enemies are better off left behind, unless you enjoy time spent chipping away at an oversized reserve of hit points.
I don't feel it's my place to tell game developers how to do their job, but an open-world zombie game has far more potential than what Techland is putting on display. There's certainly a lot of fun to be had on Dead Island, but don't be surprised if tedium sets in once you've murdered a zombie in every way imaginable (estimated time: 20 hours). |
 | New games featuring the walking dead have trouble standing out from the horde, but Techland’s first-person, open-world, action/RPG entry Dead Island distinguishes itself. After kicking and slashing my way through the infected island of Banoi, I can say the game has tons to offer.
Concept:
Deliver something just shy of the open-world zombie apocalypse game you’ve always wanted
Graphics:
The variety of character models is staggering and environments look good
Sound:
An ominous soundtrack is accentuated by squishy dismemberment and unnerving zombie screams
Playability:
The controls and menu navigation take a lot of getting used to, but the game feels nice once it all clicks
Entertainment:
As with most RPGs, the real fun takes time to settle in. But when it does, Dead Island is hard to put down
Replay:
Moderately High – Good for a long while, but the thrills won’t last forever |
